Selection Guide

How to Choose

Expert insights to help you choose the right press brake for your production floor.

Start With the Bending Conditions

The right press brake starts with the part you need to bend. Material, thickness, bending length, and tooling opening should be reviewed together before selecting machine tonnage.

01

Confirm Material

Start with material type and tensile strength because stainless and high-strength steels require more force than mild steel.

02

Check Thickness & Length

Material thickness has the biggest effect on tonnage, while bending length defines how much force is distributed across the workpiece.

03

Match V-Opening

Choose the die opening before finalizing tonnage, since a smaller V-opening increases required pressure.

Then Calculate Required Bending Tonnage:
P = 650 x S2 x L V
P
Bending Force (kN)
S
Material Thickness (mm)
L
Bending Length (m)
V
V-Opening (mm)
Quick Rule For a first estimate, use V = 8 x S for thin sheets and 10-12 x S for heavier plates.

Material Conversion Factors

1.0x Mild Steel
1.5x Stainless Steel
0.5x Aluminum
2.0x High-Strength Steel

Choosing the Right V-Opening

In general, V-opening should be 8x material thickness for materials up to 3mm, and 10-12x for heavier plates. Correct selection minimizes surface marking and reduces bending pressure.

A smaller V-opening increases required tonnage and leaves a tighter inside radius. A larger V-opening lowers pressure demand, but it also changes part geometry and flange limits.

Why This Formula Matters

The formula assumes mild steel with tensile strength of 450 N/mm2. Stainless steel typically requires about 50% higher tonnage. Overestimating force causes premature tool wear, while underestimating can damage the machine frame.

Use the result as a sizing baseline, then check material conversion, tooling availability, bending length, and a safety margin before selecting the final press brake tonnage.

Pro Tip: Always add a 20% safety margin to your calculated tonnage for optimal machine longevity.
